Monday, December 19th Advent Mini-Devo - By Lara Murphy.
God’s compassion and Israel’s betrayal play out in Hosea. There is the theme of relationship between the bride (Israel) and the groom (God) throughout the book. But in this passage, Hosea 11: 1-11, the image is one of a loving parent (God) to his beloved child (Israel). God reaches out wanting to pull His child close but is rejected. Israel disobeys and pushes God away. As a parent, we can feel the emotional hurt expressed in this passage. It’s hard to watch your child stray. God’s compassion for us as sinners, his beloved child, overflowed.
God sent his own son to earth and watched as his own son was cradled, lifted to a cheek, and led with kindness and love by Joseph and Mary. The child, that was so loved by his human parents and by God the Father would be hated by the world (us). Yet, God continued to love us so much that he sacrificed His child, Jesus Christ. Jesus did not reject his father but out of obedience died on a cross for our sins.
