Sunday, November 27th Advent Mini-Devo - By Russ Long.  (Russ is Pastor Emeritus for Bel Air Church.  He served as Lead Pastor from 1995 through 2018.  He and his wife Debb live in the Boston area, and attend the Wollaston Church of the Nazarene, where Russ is Associate Pastor of Congregational Care.

A thought about living in the intersection of time.

I used to think that intersections were interruptions to the norm and if I waited long enough they would pass .  My main issues with intersections is that I don’t like waiting.  We know there are major intersections that we have navigated such as the day we decided to give our lives to Christ.  We thought it would be smooth sailing from that point on until we came to another intersection, and then another and another.  It seems like every day there is a new intersection that requires us to do what we tell our children to do when they are crossing the street—Stop, Look, and Listen.

On Thanksgiving we gathered to celebrate and reflect on the blessing of God in the previous years.  During Christmas we will experience the joys and sorrows that characterize the season as we celebrate the blessings and mourn some of the losses.  On New Year’s Eve we will gather to reflect on the future confidence that God has a purpose and plan.  Just because we are Christians does not mean that there is no personal pain, disappointments or concerns, but despite those human realities, we know where we are heading and who is leading us.

Rather than seeing intersections as interruptions, perhaps it would be helpful to think of them as opportunities to get refocused and discover something that otherwise might be overlooked.  I think the advice we give our children might be of value in this season.  When faced with an intersection, Stop, Look and Listen!
